That said December can also be amazing. Capt. Frank released 5 marlin in a row in 5 trips during the month of December in 2023! Often the Marlin Bite is really hot a few days before and a few days affter the full moon.
There are several reasons why the Marlin fishing is great around the west coast of Puerto Rico. To begin with the famed North Drop, off Saint Thomas, is the epicenter for Blue Marlin fishing in the world. The same trench that offers such good fishing runs along the North coast of Pueto Rico. Many of the Sportfishers that once only fished out of Saint Thomas have since ventured to Pueto Rico and The Dominum Republic due to customs regulations. These boats are now putting up the same numbers here proving the magic is not only related to the North Drop.
Here on the West coast we have the convergence of the Puerto Rincon Trench and the Mona Passage. These geographic features are perfectly positioned and provide a major passageway connecting the expansive Atlantic Ocean and fertile Caribbean Sea. Heavy currents and winds converge within these pasages providing great habitate and populations of small tuna and other baitfish. The best part about these locations is the short boat ride to the fishing grounds. Runs of 15-20 miles are average to some of the best Blue Marlin Fisheries in the world. We often fish out of Combate Beach, Mayaguez, and Ricon for our Marlin Fishing Trips.
Blue Marlin Fishing Tactics in the Carribean
Simply Caught Charters LLC specializes in small boat Blue Marlin fishing. Our experience originated in the Outer Banks of NC, which has a proven track record for Big Game Fishing. We fish out of a 23 Edgewater for the largest most sought after game fish in the ocean. This creates a special, one on one, experience with the captain, boat and fish! Capt. Frank will fish for Blue Marlin in three different ways depending on conditions and the party. Hard Marlin lures are his go to favorite as they are a very agressive styly of fishing that often produce the larger fish. He also fishes ballyhoo with teasers and dredges, which produce good numbers of small fish and also offer opportunities for meat fish too. Lastely, live Tuna can also be used. These 5-10 pound fish are your best chance when the Marlin are keyed in on a certain location or piled up on schools of Tuna.
