What to expect on our verticle jigging Trips.
This private charter usually begins around 7:00 however every client is different, so we defiantly like to discuss what time works best for everyone. Upon meeting at the boat ramp we all go over any safety details and orient everyone with the fishing vessel. From there we have very short runs to the fishing grounds. Many of the species of fish we target suspend over the near shore humps and ledges close to Ricon, Combate Beach, and Isabela. After the short boat ride it may take a minute to mark the fish we want to target. Once we start fishing the action can be fast and furrious as we often see wolf packs of Tuna, Triggerfish, and Grouper.
Picking where to vertical jig in Puerto Rico for Tuna, Snapper, and Tuna.
Vertical Jigging for saltwater gamefish is one of the most versital methods for catching all sorts of fish. It can be sucessfully done in as shallow as 10 feet to depths of 700 feet. Given its versitility, an anger can catch fish in any part of Puerto Rico and the Carribean utiliting this fishing method. Simply Caught generally focuses on one of three areas when vertical jigging. For kids and and anglers looking for smaller fish near shore, the shallow reefs, cannals and flats produce great catches of Juvenille Snappers, Jacks, Groupers, and Tarpon. A little bit more offshore we have access to deeper reefs ranging from 45-100 feet deep. These areas are loaded with fish of all sort. Lastely, we often target deep water humps and ledges for Tuna and Wahoo. No matter where you are staying or what the marine weather is doing vertical jigging is always a good bet to catch alot of fish!
Vertical Jigging Techniques in the Carribean
Vertical jigging has probabaly caught more fish world wide than any other fishing technique. It is extremely effective in fresh water for Walleye, Bass, Striper, Perch, catfish and trout, just to name a few. In the saltwater it is a fish slayer. This style of fishing requires ideling around productive areas till we mark the fish we want to catch. We then drop our lures vertically to them. Capt. Frank often says its like a Nintendo game! Once the lures hit the bottom a slich bounce will produce instant bites.
There are several jigging methods that work great in catching pelagics and reef fish in Puerto Rico. On the reefs small flutter type jigs such as Megabait, Shimano Flatfall, and Rapalla swim jigs all work wonders. The jigging techniques for these fish is a bit more finnesse and require bumps and hopes near the bottom. We often mark suspended fish such as Triggerfish and Yelloweye Snapper in the 100 foot range that require small jigs that stay in that range longer. So knowing where your jig is in relation to bottom is a must. For this fishing we are generally in 100 feet or less and use 15-30 pound braid. Areas such as Combate Beach, Puerto Real and Ricon all have short boat rides to the shallow water reefs
For fishing larger species in Puerto Rico deep water heavy metal spoons like Nomad Streaker jig, Shimano butterfly flat fall, Mustad Rip Rollers, Flat Falls, and Nomad Buffalo jigs all work great. For most of our jigging we stick with 15-45 pound braid with 12 foot flourcarbon leaders. The braid helps cut through the water to keep the lures straight under us on windy days. Again, marking fish is always desired but in the deeper water these fish move around more so drifting over humps and ledges will often produce a bite. For deep water jigging larger spoons anywhere 200-700 grams is required. Some days the fish prefer a slow flutter and other days they prefer heavy knive style spoons. Its all about what they want on any given day. This type of fishing can be exhausting. It requires constantly dropping lures to hundreds of feet then ripping it back up. That said the bite can be exhilerating. Once thing to keep in mind: Hang onto the rod because the bite can be ferouscious!
