This fishing charter is for all people with semi-long attention spans who look for the big bites. It requies time spent stairing a a single rod tip for the slightest bump. This tour begins around 7:30 in the morning. Upon arrival at one of the three boat landings on the West Coast of Puerto Rico, everyone meets up for the morning briefing and safety discusions before taking off. After a short ride to the fishing grounds we deploy two rods near the bottom and either drift or bump troll depending on conditions. If anyone in your party is suseptiple to sea sickness we strongly recomend medication. This slow roll of the boat will often get people sea sick. We generally have time for 3 drops on a 1/2 day Swordfish charter and 5 - 6 for the full day charters. If we are lucky enough to hook a Swordfish if often takes hours to reel in. We also catch serveral other species while fishing these depths including Pomfret, Tresher Shark, and Escolar. Swordfish is one of the tastest fish in the ocean. We rarely release them on these trips but that decision ultimatally rest on the client.
Best Time to Fish for Swordfish in Puerto Rico
Swordfish are caught year around in Puerto Rico. The best time to catch Swordfish during the Winter and early Spring. We target Swordfish during the daytime hours when they follow prey, often squid, down deep. Much like Blue Marlin fishing we see most of the bites around the 8:30 and 12:00 times.
Where to catch Swordfish in Puerto Rico
Swordfish can be caught anywhere. That said, there are defiantly areas that can be more productive. Large geaographic such as ridges, mounts, and points are where we start looking. Good adjancy to deep water is also critical. Swordfishing here in Puerto Rico we often look for mud bottoms as aposed to deep water reefs. There are two reasons for this. 1: We don’t loose our gear by catching the reef and breaking off 300 dollars worth of line, swivels, and hooks. 2: Swordfish love to dig in the mud in search of pray. With this in mind. Simply Caught Charters often fishes off Isabela, Aguidilla, Combate, and Cabo Rojo. The weather often helps us choose a direction to fish then we fine tune it from there.
Techniques Used to Catch Swordfish in P.R.
Swordfishing is one of the most technical type of fishing in saltwater fishing. Catching large billfish at depths around 2000 feet requires special tackle and rods to fish effectively. Simply Caught Charters uses two type of electric reels while fishing. A Penn Hooker Electric paired with Barrett 60-130 class swordfish rod is deployed 100s of yards behind the boat on a Bouy. Another LP electric reel with the same Barrett rod is deployed from the rod tip straight down. This allows us to fish two baits 2000 feet down without getting tangled. The Hooker Electric does have the capability of manual reeling for those clients looking to do battle!
We most often fish strip bait with squid skirts and dead squid behind 7-8 pound weights near the bottom on our Swordfish Charters. in Puerto Rico. The ideal speed of 1.3-2 kts is maintaied by drifting or bump trolliong near ledges, holes, points, and many other geographic features that might hold bait and ultimatally Swordfish. We then closely watch the rod tips for the slightest bump that might indicate a bite. With 2600 feet of line out the smallest tap could be a massive hit on the bait. Much like Marlin fishing we then drive the hook with heavy drag and moving the boat forward to take up slack. Once the rod is “loaded” we back the drag off to a very light setting. Remember there is a 8 pound wieght pullin on the fish 100 feet from the hook. Most Swordfish will swim up away from the lead weight. At this point we only take up the slack. Once we get to the weight we remove the lead and the fight begins. Swordfish often sound back to the bottom at this point or run straight out leaping into the air. This is a super exciting time. It can take up to 5-6 hours sometimes to land these fish. During this time the anxiety builds. Only after a Harpoon shot and putting a few gaffs in the fish can the crew relax.
